The three Royal Thai Navy SEAL divers and medics who stayed in the cave with the boys and coach since they were located on July 2. Officials said they emerged from the cave "healthy" shortly after the last rescues were made, July 10, 2018. Royal Thai Navy SEALs

Thai Cave Rescue and Missions

August 11, 2018 Thai Cave Rescue and Missions Unsung Heroes of the Mission: Every Role Matters in the Rescue of Hope It was the story that for about 2 weeks, captivated the world. The Thai boys soccer (or Futbol depending on your preference) and their coach who were trapped in a cave. I personally had been following it every day. From the time I woke up until I went to bed at night, I would find myself checking my phone for updates as to the situation, all the while praying for rescue and life. I know this was the case for multitudes around the world. When word was received of the retired Thai Navy Seal diver who lost his life in the rescue effort, things seemed to take a downward turn and even though news that they were still alive had been encouraging, this loss of a heroes life was very disheartening. The rescuers pressed on, however, and did not lose hope. Then, a couple of days later (and over the course of 3 days), we received the joyous news that the mission of rescuing the 13, stranded in darkness and essentially, a grave, was a success! My friend Peter, was talking about this a couple of weeks ago, before the boys had been rescued, and it really got me thinking about all of the moving parts that it took to make this a success. To be completely honest, this entire story had me captivated and emotional. Throughout this ordeal, and especially through the difficulties, loss, and ultimately – success, I can’t stop thinking about those of YOU who are a part of our support team. I also can’t stop thanking the Father for you and your heart. As I read the story and even since the rescue have gone back and looked at and read through several times what it took to make the mission a success, what has gripped me was how so many people had a role in seeing it through. See, a lot of focus is put on the Thai Navy Seals and the rescue divers who came in from other countries to actually go into the darkness, put themselves on the “frontlines” as it were, search for life, and when found, provide hope and a way out. It is truly incredible and I applaud them loudly for their efforts and selflessness. I have found myself however, drawn to all of the other seemingly “little” things. The laundromat that cleaned up the rescuers clothes every night so that they could start again fresh the next day; the locals who saw that the toilets needed more attention than they ever had, so they took it upon themselves to clean them; the drivers who offered free rides for rescuers, medics, etc. to get up and down the mountain; people setting up to serve free food and drinks to help provide sustenance to all involved; along with many more things. That moved me. People saw needs and stepped in to help, from the Navy Seals and divers to those willing to clean toilets – truly remarkable! Just being honest, people like me and my family are sometimes celebrated when we return to our “home” country or churches as we are sometimes viewed through a similar lens as that of these Navy Seals and rescue divers. Continuing in that honesty, it feels good to at least be remembered when you return. Sometimes when you’re overseas “on mission”, it can feel like you are forgotten as distance – even with the internet – does keep you away from people you know love you, but out of sight out of mind can sometimes be a real thing and a real feeling. I am thankful though, for the other rescuers that are a part of our team, our missional family. Those of you who spend time each day in prayer for us and those we are here to “rescue” by carrying the hope of Jesus to them, are in no way forgotten. Those of you who have come out here to love on our family, and love the people we are loving, are in no way forgotten. Those of you who give of your finances to help support our being here, in the dark, searching for life and delivering the only means of rescue that will truly bring them to Light and Life, are in no way forgotten. We are so thankful for you. We thank the Father for you daily. We see you. We feel you. We want to honor you and your selflessness to be on mission with us. It is truly an honor to be a part of this with you. Thank you. Thai rescue teams arrange a water pumping system at the entrance to a flooded cave complex where 12 boys and their soccer coach have been trapped since June 23, in Mae Sai, Chiang Rai province, northern Thailand in this undated photo released by Royal Thai Navy, July 7, 2018. Royal Thai Navy via AP One more thing I want to say as well, as this is something I am extremely passionate about, is that we see you as people also on those front lines. Whether you are in full-time ministry, work in the corporate world or blue-collar world, own your own business, are a stay-at-home parent, are a student, or anything else. Where the Father has you right now is your mission. There are people all around you, lost in caves without hope, and you are their Navy Seal, you are their rescue diver. It might be your spouse, your child, your friend, your co-worker, your waitress, an employee, your boss, or anyone else. You are their best chance of being brought to the Light and Life of Jesus. Whatever it takes, I want to encourage you to open your life and be willing to go into the darkness, to carry the oxygen and path of Jesus to them. Whether its ever seen or not here on this …

Love Through Power

December 12, 2017 Love Through Power Subheading to give the users a sneak peak about the content of the article. This past Sunday, I spoke at the church we attend and partner with, Every Nation Taipei. Pastor KC asked me to speak specifically about “lifestyle discipleship”, which I was very excited about doing. As I sat with Mark finishing up breakfast and coffee, we began praying for the Chinese and International services, the people who would be there, and also for my ability to communicate clearly in Chinese the message I had prepared. As we prayed, I felt like the Father was telling me that before I started sharing what I had prepared, that He wanted me to pray for healing for people with back problems. I had never started a service off that way in my life, but I really felt strongly it was from the Lord. After worship, I simply asked if there was anyone there who had pain in their back. Four people came forward to be prayed for and the Lord touched their lives! After I shared, I stayed on the side in case anyone wanted to come ask questions or receive prayer for anything. Several people came up with different problems in their body. There were shoulder issues, neck issues, and another back issue. Each person shared that they felt relief and that the Lord was bringing healing. One elderly lady came up informing us she had a bad problem with dry eyes. As we prayed, I saw her eyes beginning to water. We praised the Lord together for that healing and touch! I want to share with you in this blog post, however, about a lady named Sharon. Sharon informed me that she had a tumor in the middle of her brain. When first discovered, it was a pretty large tumor. The doctors who performed surgery on her were only able to remove about half of the mass due to it’s location. She asked if I would pray for her healing. Of course, I would! I asked her if she would be ok with me placing my hand on her head as I prayed for her, which she had no problem with. As soon as I began to pray, I felt an intense heat flow from my fingers into her head. Up to this point, with everyone I had prayed for, I hadn’t felt anything manifest physically, but with Sharon, I did. Her entire head began to heat up immediately. She began smiling as it happened. As I continued praying, the heat continued to intensify. If you’ve ever used those “Hot Hands” to put in your pocket to keep you warm in the cold, it felt a lot like that at it’s most intense. In the middle of my prayer I asked her, “Can you feel that?!”, to which she replied, “YES!” She then began giggling, then jumping, as the Father poured His love on her. I love the look on Sharon’s face as she experiences the Father’s tangible love. When we finished praying, she said that as we prayed, she felt like a huge, bright light was in front of her radiating heat. Hope (who was praying with me), said that she saw as she was praying, a picture of something just melting out of her. It was great being a part of that with her. Our close friend who has become family, Bertina, saw her and went to hug her several minutes later and said that she was still excited about how the Father had touched her and still had heat radiating from her, so much so that she was sweating. We all believe that the Father was healing her in that moment, through the name of Jesus. We are believing for a clear MRI report after her next visit (which isn’t until later next year, so we have a while).  I share this to give glory to God and to hopefully encourage and challenge you. See, I used to believe that healing, signs, and wonders – what I just like to refer to as the Father’s work, don’t happen anymore. That it was something that stopped long ago when the original Apostles passed away. To be honest, I don’t really know where that came from. Now however, I’ve seen many people healed and set free and touched by the Father’s love in the name of Jesus! It’s not 100% of the time, but it’s way more than it was when I didn’t believe. It’s even way more than when I did start believing but didn’t begin to step out in faith to pray for the person. I wish we could have seen Sybil healed completely earlier this year during her fight with cancer, but we didn’t. We are excited though, that she gave her life to the Lord through that process and is now with Him, completely free. I’ve seen enough now, through reading the Bible, and through personal experience to know, that God is very much in the business of healing and showing His love to people even now in 2017. I’m excited for the potential with Sharon’s testimony and experience of the Father’s love. I’m excited for all of the others that were prayed for on Sunday who didn’t “feel” any physical heat, but who did experience relief and peace from a problem that was actively bothering them. I have changed through this long walk toward believing that there’s more. I’ve grown to expect more. I now expect to see deliverance take place in my life and the lives of those around me. For a long time as I was learning it, I was scared to talk about it or bring it up, because to be honest, I had a fear of man. Even when I began seeing people healed and set free, I still feared man. No more. I suppose that’s one of the reasons I’m writing this blog post. I hope that it both challenges and encourages …

January 28, 2016 We’re Here! 祢好!We hope that this finds you all well! So, after about 32 hours of travel, we made it to Taiwan! The girls did very well for the most part. They thought being in airports was really cool and LOVED that the long flights from Detroit to Tokyo and Tokyo to Taipei they got to have their own TV in the back of the seat. It also helped to have Uncle Mark waiting for us at the airport. The familiar face was a warm welcome for all of us. We even had our good friend Eva show up at midnight as a surprise just after we arrived at the guest apartments we’re currently staying in. We’ve been able to reconnect with some old friends already, which has been really nice. So far the girls have done really well and I think they’re finally over jet lag. Charis especially has loved it. They’ve already become (in their minds) professionals on the subway. Charis has wanted to eat Chinese breakfast every.single.morning. Meili would drink this yogurt-type drink they have here the entire time if we would let her. Liliana is quite the fan of rice. They love walking the streets and got to see their first large rat today in an alley we walk quite a bit, which they thought was pretty cool – they even named him “Brownie”. I see all of this as an honor…that the Father would love me so much to stretch my capacity. Where are being stretched? What is a recent example of the Lord’s faithfulness in your life? I’d love to hear your testimony in the comments below. We finally made it! So far, their favorite things are 7-11, the mango and strawberry ice, breakfast, the subway, and the local neighborhood park. We are currently apartment hunting and trying to figure out where we’re supposed to be. We’ve made a few posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, so be sure to follow us there for more going’s-on. Have a great day, we love you! Liliana loves rice Mango_Strawberry Ice_First time First Subway Ride Liliana on subway Comments Leave a Reply Cancel reply Logged in as Ani Kirkes. Edit your profile. Faithfulness & Indiana Jones

December 4, 2015 Faithfulness & Indiana Jones It seems that over the past year, every time that I’ve been led to think on the Lord and what He is to me, the very first word that comes to mind is “faithful”. Over and over and over again, I find myself thanking Him for being so faithful. It’s something I’ve been thinking through even more so here recently. Today marks 3 years officially cancer-free for me, which is a pretty big deal. Seriously, in my life over the years, time and time again He has proven faithful. As we are in the final 6+ weeks of our time here in the States, we inevitably get asked by everyone we see about how things are going and where we are in the process. Basically, here is where we are as of today: We just purchased our plane tickets yesterday and will be departing on Jan. 18. We just sold our house today. We are still working on the visa situation. We are trying to figure out what is going with us and how we are going to ship the few things that we are taking. We have raised between 70-75% of the support that we need on a monthly basis, so we still have a bit further to go. Regarding the last point, in man’s wisdom it doesn’t make sense that we would have already purchased tickets for mid-January. Initially we thought that the finances would all be in prior to making the arrangements, however the more we prayed about it and had others praying about it, the more we felt that the Father was telling us to begin moving and as we walked, the provision would come. To be completely honest, as a husband and father, that’s a tough pill to swallow. I’ve always seen it as my responsibility to provide for and protect my family, and now all of a sudden I’m being challenged to trust in something that is not tangibly present yet. The Father has stretched me more during this season than I’ve ever been stretched in my life. I had a good job in the corporate world working for a great global company and I was able through that to provide for my family. Now all of a sudden I find myself in a place where I don’t know for certain where all of our provision will be coming from, other than the Lord. The movie scene that comes to mind is from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. You know the scene…Indy’s dad has been shot and is lying there dying. Indy is his only hope at making it to the cup that can provide the healing his dad needs (not exactly theologically sound, but hey, it’s a movie). He makes it successfully through the initial trials when all of a sudden he finds himself at the edge of the large cavern where he cannot see the bottom and he cannot jump across. After a few moments and knowing that life or death hangs in the balance, he comes to the realization that “it’s a leap of faith”. He lets go of the wall, sticks his foot in the air and steps into what his eyes cannot see…and when it appears that he will certainly fall into the cavern, his foot hits something and a bridge appears before him. Once he stepped into the faith, his perspective was changed and he was tangibly able to see the provision that was there all along. That movie scene summarizes beautifully where I feel like the Lord has me in this moment. The Father has spoken to me that the best way for me to provide for and protect my family is to trust Him as Protector and Provider. The word translated “Lord” in the Bible, also means, “Owner”. The way I see it, I have 2 choices. I can sulk and ask the Owner why everything isn’t already ready, or I can praise and trust that this is His thing anyways and, “faithful is He who has promised, and He will bring it to pass.” (1 Thess. 5.24) I choose the latter. I see all of this as an honor…that the Father would love me so much to stretch my capacity. Where are being stretched? What is a recent example of the Lord’s faithfulness in your life? I’d love to hear your testimony in the comments below. Once he stepped into the faith, his perspective was changed and he was tangibly able to see the provision that was there all along. I have found this to be true too. God bless you and I stand along side of you believing for His provision for you all. Let Your Faith Be Greater Than Your Fear!

August 17, 2015 Let Your Faith Be Greater Than Your Fear! Faith Over Fear: Trusting God’s Plan in the Face of Uncertainty “You’re going out of town today?!” Charis said as I was dropping her off for her first day camp. “But what if you aren’t back to pick me up?!” “Charis, have I ever not picked you up?” “No.” she said. “Have I ever not been there for you?”  “No.” came her reply. “I will be there today too.” I said a little frustrated at her irrational fear. I felt the Lord gently remind me…”Rhonda, have I ever not provided for you? Have I ever not been there for you?” “Um, no.” I said in my spirit and smiled as I realized Charis’ worry was a reminder to me of my sometimes irrational fears and how the Lord is always there saying the same thing, “I AM FAITHFUL! I have never not been there for you.” Raising support is a new adventure for us. It’s one that, I have to admit, is a little awkward and uncomfortable at times. These thoughts began coming to my mind…”What if we do the best we can and it’s a flop? What if, after all this time of waiting to return to Taiwan and walking through the doors He has opened, the money doesn’t come in? What if friendships are affected because people feel weird about not being able to support us?” These are some of the thoughts that came one day not long ago. The word I kept hearing from the Lord is “faithful”. He always has been and always will be faithful. I felt Him challenge me to not apologize for what He is calling us to…to see it and share it as an opportunity to partner with what He is doing and wants to do in Taiwan. “But what if my girls have a really hard time adjusting? What about the time they will miss with our family left in America? What about those relationships? I don’t know if I can watch them grieve at such a young age. It will break my heart. I don’t know how I’m going to do this.” The Lord quickly reminds me, “I’ve made them for this Rhonda. I love them more than you do and I have a great adventure waiting for all of you. Your girls are in your family for a reason.” “Do you trust me?” “Yes, I do trust You.” The words of Peter come to mind, “Where else will I go?” Only You have the words of life.” As I surrender…again…excitement replaces the fear. What an honor to be called to this! What an honor to be an empty vessel the Lord can use to reach the nations. This world has nothing to offer compared to the fullness of the Lord and walking in step with Him! That’s what I want my girls to know, to learn, and to experience for themselves even at ages 6, 4, and 8 months old, because He is worth it! He is worth all of it and more. This life is not about me…it’s not about my girls or Clay or our life together. It’s all about Jesus and making His name known and making Him famous in this life. It’s about the Father’s love and how His love can and will abolish fear among the nations and draw His sons and daughters home. Is the Lord calling you to something that seems impossible? If so, is your fight bigger than your fear? I don’t want to miss out on anything He has for me. What an adventure this life is and we only have one life! So get out there and trust Him more than yourself. Let your faith be greater than your fear. Comments JanuceAugust 19, 2017 at 2:24 am | EditReply Love reading this-will again and again! Jennifer FreshAugust 21, 2015 at 8:12 pm | EditReply Rhonda and Clay, I can completely relate to your fears concerning your girls. When we felt called to become foster parents, our 3 biological children were a huge concern. How would having other children come into our home and live with us effect them? To make a long story short, God has shown me exactly what you already know. My 3 kids were made to be foster siblings. They have loved several other kiddos as if they were our own! It has been such a joy to see! We are praying for you, Clay and the girls! I know God has big plans for you and your ministry! Mark’s Story…

May 12, 2015 Mark’s Story… Meet Mark: Our Friend & Teammate in Taiwan | His Story & Our First Conversation! https://youtu.be/6wA3iAcSh1w Meet Mark Zheng. This is the name of a man you will hear about quite a bit over the coming months and years as he is my closest friend and will be working alongside us during our time in Taiwan. He actually lives in Taipei. We had the pleasure of having Mark stay with us for most of the month of April, which was awesome! Our girls had a great time getting to know “Uncle Mark” better, which is great as they’ll have someone locally that they’re really familiar with when we do make the move. While Mark was here, he graciously sat down to share his story on camera and to answer some questions that will help give you a better feel for what things are like in Taiwan. Right now, we’re going to introduce him and his story. In the video I also share our very first conversation, which was a bit of a “Who’s on first” situation in two languages – classic! The Dragon Warrior

April 23, 2015 The Dragon Warrior Embracing Who God Made You to Be If you read my husband’s first blog post, he compared his journey to Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit.’ Well, where he relates to Bilbo, I relate to Kung Fu Panda :) …..seriously though. I grew up as a pastor’s kid in South Carolina. I can remember in middle and high school feeling frustrated because I was always looked to as a “leader” and always being held to what seemed to be higher standards than other kids around me. I loved the Lord and had a relationship with Him even then. I distinctly remember a moment where I felt like the Lord was saying, “I wouldn’t have put you in this position if you couldn’t handle it.” So, I just embraced my life, looked to the Lord, and did what He asked me to do to the best that I could at that age. My journey led me through college then overseas where I lived for a year in Poland and a year and a half in Taiwan. I remember trying to pin point what the Lord was “calling” me to in my future and I narrowed it to music or missions or both. I met Clay along the way and together we said forever to what the Lord had for us believing it would be back overseas one day. A couple of years ago, the Lord showed us we were in the right place and our moving overseas would be coming soon. I kind of freaked out. :) I realized that in the few years leading up to this, there had been many insecurities, questions, and doubts that I had been believing about myself.

An Unexpected Journey…

March 15, 2015 An Unexpected Journey… "Each step along the journey he had to make a choice…" The Shire, from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” was a beautiful and considerably sleepy little place in the grand scheme of Middle Earth. It was here, after a visit from Gandalf and a group of dwarves, that the ordinary Bilbo Baggins was invited on a journey, a journey for which he initially felt drastically under-qualified, which even made him question the sanity of the one asking. After several initial declines, he decided to say “yes”, and his life changed forever. He became part of a grander story, one that ultimately helped him realize the depths of his identity, find a greater sense of purpose, and restore things that had gone wrong in the lives of others and the world. Each step along the journey he had to make a choice, he could turn back as things got harder and what lay ahead was unclear and potentially scary, or he could continue on and see through to completion the quest for which he was born. This story resonates deep within me…
